Abstract

The natural gas resources in the Upper Paleozoic Permian Shanxi Formation Section 2 and Shihezi Formation Section 8 of the Mizhi gas field in the eastern part of the Ordos Basin are abundant. However, the geological conditions for natural gas accumulation are complex, and the favorable exploration direction is not clear, which has led to no significant breakthroughs in the development of the main layer of the Mizhi gas field for the time being. To clarify the main controlling factors of the low-abundance gas reservoirs in the Mizhi Gas Field of the Ordos Basin, through drilling, logging, seismic and experimental data and other materials, the geological conditions for reservoir formation in the Mizhi Gas Field were systematically analyzed to reveal the geological reasons for the poor development effect and establish the reservoir formation model of the main layer of the Mizhi Gas Field. Research shows that the Mizhi gas field has an abundant gas source, and an adequate gas supply is the material basis for the formation of natural gas reservoirs. Poor reservoir quality is the core internal cause of the formation of low abundance. The insufficient supply of material sources restricts the development of sand bodies. Intense compaction and cementation further aggravate the deterioration of physical properties, and the improvement effect of dissolution is limited. The basin tectonic inversion since the Late Cretaceous has led the Mizhi area to be in the gas-water transition zone. The original water saturation in the gas reservoir is high, reducing the effective storage space for natural gas. The developed fracture system has disrupted the sealing property of the original gas reservoir, leading to the escape of natural gas and the formation of a low-pressure gas reservoir. Together, they constitute the key external factors for the formation of low abundance. Based on the above analysis, the accumulation model of the main layer of the Mizhi gas field was established. This research can provide theoretical support for the exploration and development of low-abundance gas reservoirs in the eastern part of the Ordos Basin.
