Abstract

This study reports a novel solid-state-hydrothermal hybrid strategy for synthesizing phase-pure cubic ZnS. Starting with the high-temperature solid-state synthesis of K2Zn3S4 precursor, subsequent hydrothermal deintercalation yielded ZnS powders with cubic zinc-blende structure. Optical characterization revealed a direct bandgap of 3.50 eV and prominent red emission at 620 nm (2.0 eV) under 365 nm excitation, which can be attributed to de-trapping recombination between sulfur vacancies and zinc vacancies. This work establishes a dopant-free pathway for engineering ZnS luminescence through intrinsic defect control.
